Harper is The Best Helper

Laramie went back to work on Monday. Now I am home, with only 2 arms, one lap and sans any lactating breasts, from 2pm into the witching hour, to dinnertime to night night. Needless to say, I was nervous. But so far, so good. It is 7:50pm, Tuesday and both children are asleep. Whew.

One advantage to having an almost 2-year-old is that Harper is very eager to help. As I was getting ready to roll out the pizza dough for dinner, she pointed to her step stool and said "help." Up she climbed and helped me roll out the dough and sprinkle the stone with cornmeal.

I lost her though when it was time for the toppings. She became immediately occupied with dipping a bottle lid into my glass and drinking all of my lemonade. The things we sacrifice for quiet, busy children.

I was able to get the pizza in the oven and have dinner for us in a timely manner. And it was pretty tasty too. Ugly, but tasty.

We had pizza for supper too, although we forgo the cheese. It makes me laugh to read about your daughter sipping all of your drink up one bottle lid at a time. Ha! It's so true that it's easy to overlook when they're so concentrated or distracted by these small things. Oh how many times I've watched my daughter slowly take the laces out of my running shoes and try and put them back in haphazardly!

I can only image what it would be like to mother without the solution to just about any problem- breastfeeding. My heart goes out to you! I took care of a friend's son for a time. He was four months older than my own son and I felt so lucky (and lazy!) that I could at least nurse him when the going got tough. I'm sure you've already got other tricks for soothing down pat though by now. (Hey I know you have a peapod but maybe a double kid's seat for Eliza is what you need now! *raises eyebrows up and down suggestively*)

Wish I could have been there to help out but as usual you just step up and in your calm, kind, special way make it happen. Want to be just like you when I grow up!!!

Annie,

I am in the stewing phase of a double seat design. I still have some time before Windham can sit up in a seat.

Do you have one now? I would love to see it. Any tips or suggestions?

My husband made one some weeks ago but it still needs some padded seats and strapping.

I've been using my ring sling as a belt for my son (who's almost 1.5 years) and it's worked so well I haven't got on the strapping I was going to do asap. It wasn't going to be major strapping but enough that if they fell asleep they wouldn't fall out. I also wanted to make some water proof(ish) cushions especially for the long trips.

We may be taking our bikes on the train up Vancouver Island (where we live) and take a long ferry to Prince Rupert (northern end of the province) to visit some friends. It could be quite a bit of riding to get around and I want it to be comfortable.

I'm also working on a way to make some sort of weather shelter. Like thin bent metal poles to hold some sort of plastic shield.... Wow, re reading that it sounds quite bizarre but I assure you it could be cool! :D

If you were ever looking for more detailed options I could always send you the measurements our seat?

Annie,

I would love any specifics you can share for the kid seats. I am not so handy in the carpentry dept.

I saw this on a blog the other day with an xtracycle cover

Omg. Yes. That's kinda what I was envisioning. Can't wait to show my husband. That step up is so great!

I'm out of town right now but I'll be back with more.
