At Least Emergency Rooms are Air Conditioned

Yesterday when we picked Harper up from Art Camp she had fallen and busted her lip open. On first glance it didn't look too bad. It had stopped bleeding quickly and she was fine.

On further inspection, it was a full-on gash that we decided deserved a trip to the doctor. Laramie called, made an appointment, confirmed our insurance was accepted and off she went. When she arrived, guess what. No deal on the insurance. Thankfully they were helpful and suggested the clinic down the road that would accept our insurance. Back in the car and down the road they went.

The doctor at the next clinic took a look at the gash and proclaimed it out of his scope and suggested it could even require a plastic surgeon. Now we are moving into Holy Shit-ville. And off to the ER where at least it is air conditioned.

At this point, Nana and Poppy swoop, take WPH and then Big Joe drives me to the ER to meet them. I arrive to find Harper in great spirits despite the ordeal and mostly focused on when she will get her popsicle. The girl has her priorities straight to be sure.

We wait and wait and finally the ER doctor takes a look and decides stitches are indeed necessary. He can do it but the Pediatric Surgeons are on their way so better let them handle it. More waiting. A whole lot of TV. More inquiries as to the arrival of the promised popsicle

The surgeon arrives, they dope her up with ketamine, put in 2 layers of stitches and we are done. After her world stops moving she finally gets the popsicle. And better yet, a belly full of peanut butter MILKSHAKE to end the night.

The stitches will dissolve, her smile is intact. One might not even know we spent half of yesterday in the ER. That is until she uses it to her advantage to manipulate her moms into giving her what she wants. We are on to her; we are playing right long!

Who you talking to?

Scene: Harper talking to someone on the front porch

Harper: My name is Harper. I'm supposed to scare the squirrels away, but I'm not that scary. I don't really scare the squirrels.

Laramie: Harps, who are you talking to?

Harper: Blue. (the cat in our neighbor's bedroom window, who snoozes there most of the day.)

Doin' Some Business

The children spent a few days down in Portland with Nana. They had some business to tend to, otherwise it was all party fun time.

Does anyone need a private eye? They work for fishy crackers and milk.

The Gender Neutral Lego

How cool is this old Lego ad from 1981? I mean, this was me and my Legos when I was a kid. Just building, building building. I even had the pigtails!

As we were shopping for Legos for Xmas this last year, I noticed some new Lego options that certainly didn't exist when I was a kid: pink and purple block sets. Blech. There even seem to be sets specifically geared toward little girls. But I don't even want to know.

The cool thing about Legos was that they surpassed any gender designation in my mind. Both my brother and I loved them and played with them equally. I may have tended more toward the city set whereas he favored the space and castle sets. But I made my fair share of winged fighters…I remember my best friend's brother built a remote controlled Lego car and it WAS THE COOLEST THING I HAD EVER, EVER SEEN. EVER. Maybe still is.

We have been playing with the Legos a lot lately. Harper building great modern towers and flying ships. Windham stacking blocks for what might only be described as some sort of Lego rod for which to hold in the air while he grunts, "Erch, Uch." This from the boy who chose silver, sparkley Mary Janes for his footwear yesterday.

There will be no pink and purple Legos in our house. I want to pass along the same gender neutrality to my kids that this ad reflects and that I felt as a kid sitting for hours, sifting, searching and creating.

Long live the Lego, in all its gender neutral glory.

What Happens in Portland, Stays in Portland

Harper is in Portland right now with Nana and Poppy. They are having a gas. I can't even imagine the amount of sugar involved in the making of these cupcakes. But the look on Harper's face suggests she has a very good idea.

It reminds me of Little Chrissy, the sister in the movie Pecker.

Dancing Queen, The Sequel

Harper has started to do some amazing dancing. I taught her a few of these moves but some of the really brilliant ones are 100% her. She has a real gift this one.

Did you see those moves? I think there is some clogging in there.

Harper Sings

Harper entertained us with her Bumble Bee song on our ride down to Portland last weekend.

We aren't sure what language she is singing in here. We guess some sort of ancient Polynesian/Chinese pidgin. She does a lot of singing in this language. Very loud and very confident.

Summer Nights

Windham is quite enamored with this garden gnome. He was carrying it around last night, using it as a phone. Maybe the gnome is speaking to him?

Harper is fishing. See the fish?
